Mitt Romney has called on President Donald Trump to apologize for his comments following the Charlottesville, Virginia, rally that turned violent on Saturday.

In his speech, Trump blamed “both sides” for the violence, a statement critics have said created a moral equivalency between the white nationalists and supremacists and those who were protesting them, CNN reported.

“Whether he intended to or not, what he communicated caused racists to rejoice,” Romney said in a Facebook post, going on to say that explaining away what Trump said wouldn’t change how it was perceived by those who heard it.

“Unless it is addressed by the president as such . . . there may commence an unraveling of our national fabric,” Romney continued. “Our allies around the world are stunned and our enemies celebrate; America’s ability to help secure a peaceful and prosperous world is diminished.”

“[Trump] should address the American people, acknowledge that he was wrong, apologize,” Romney continued. "State forcefully and unequivocally that racists are 100 percent to blame for the murder and violence in Charlottesville.”

He concluded by asking Trump to act for the country’s good.

Romney has been openly critical of Trump since before the 2016 primary, at one point calling him a “phony” and a “fraud,” CNN reported.

The post garnered more than 25,000 comments, many of which were not supportive of Romney’s views.
