Nancy Pelosi has endorsed New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for re-election over Democratic primary challenger, "Sex in the City" actress Cynthia Nixon, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
The polarizing U.S. House minority leader and former House Speaker gave a full-throated endorsement of Cuomo in his Sept. 13 primary against Nixon, who is expected to challenge the governor for liberal and female voters, noted the Post.
"I support Gov. Cuomo's re-election — wholeheartedly," Pelosi said after a ceremony where Cuomo, son of former New York governor Mario Cuomo, signed gun safety legislation, the tabloid said.
Pelosi appeared to be returning a favor to Cuomo after the New York governor joined her last June in a Democratic campaign to attempt to take back the House of Representatives, targeting upstate New York U.S. representatives John Faso and Chris Collins, the New York Daily News reported then.
The Emmy and Tony Award winning actress, 51, formally entered the race against Cuomo in March, promising a tumultuous six month campaign leading up to September's primary against Cuomo, 60, according to The New York Times.
"We are now the most unequal state in the entire country, with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty," Nixon declared in a video posted on Twitter announcing her candidacy, the Times reported.
"Our leaders are letting us down. … We want our government to work again, on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway. We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us. It can't just be business as usual anymore," Nixon added in the ad, per the Times.
Cuomo said then that he was not concerned about the challenge from the left of his party.
"I'm not nervous about whoever runs," Cuomo said, the Times noted. "There'll be people who run. That's called elections, and that's fine."
