The NFL is accusing Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of “damaging the league,” The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a letter from the league to the team owner’s attorney.
The letter was sent amid mounting tension surrounding contract extension negotiations with commissioner Roger Goodell, which Jones reportedly is attempting to block.
Jones has threatened to take legal action against other NFL owners who are on the league's compensation committee should Goodell’s contract be extended.
The letter, saying Jones’ “antics, whatever their motivation, are damaging the League,” was shared with all 32 of the league’s owners, the Journal said.
People familiar with the situation have revealed that some of the owners were urging others to consider disciplinary action against Jones, which could include suspension.
The Journal said the league’s letter was sent to Jones’s lawyer, David Boies, and said: “Mr. Jones is in possession of a document that shows that certain statements made about those negotiations are not accurate.”
“With due respect, we urge Mr. Jones to drop his misguided litigation threats and media campaign to undermine the Committee’s mandate.”
The letter, from NFL attorney Brad S. Karp to Boies, was also shown to The Washington Post.
“We urge Mr. Jones to honor the resolution that he and his fellow owners adopted and allow the Committee to continue its work, in compliance with the May 2017 Resolution and the League Constitution. And we urge Mr. Jones to support the Committee’s deliberations, not attempt to sabotage them,” th letter said
