Nick Blackwell Remains in Induced Coma After Saturday Boxing Match

Boxer Nick Blackwell remained in an induced coma after a fight Saturday against Chris Eubank Jr. after he suffered bleeding to the brain in a British middleweight fight in London.

The Telegraph reported that Blackwell, 25, was listed in stable condition in intensive care at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, on Monday. The bout was stopped in the 10th round Saturday after Blackwell could no longer see out of his left eye because it was swollen shut.

After the match was topped, Blackwell collapsed in the ring and he was removed by a stretcher after officials administered oxygen to him. He was then transferred to St. Mary's.

"I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and he said there is a bleeding of the brain," Robert Smith, the general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, told The Guardian on Sunday. "He's in intensive care, he's in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts.

"It's a very normal procedure. They put you in a coma to get the swelling to go down. There's no timescale. Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing," Smith continued.

Eubanks showed compassion to his opponent in two Twitter posts on Sunday.





Chris Eubanks Sr., who was in his son's boxing corner, told The Guardian that the fight reminded him of his 1991 match with Michael Watson, wherein Watson suffered severe brain damage. That fight led British boxing officials to increase safety during professional fights.

Other fighters showed their support for Blackwell on social media.
