Nigel Terry, the British actor best remembered for playing King Arthur in the 1981 Hollywood movie "Excalibur," has died of emphysema. He was 69.
Terry played opposite Helen Mirren and Nicol Williamson in the John Boorman Hollywood take of the
Knights of the Roundtable, according to The Guardian. "Excalibur" made $34 million at the box office domestically, which puts it among the top 20 grossing movies at the
theater that year, noted BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Terry first made his film debut in 1968's "The Lion in Winter" with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. He also starred in the 1986 movie "Caravaggio" with Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean.
"Terry trained as a stage actor with repertory companies including the Oxford Meadow Players and
Bristol Old Vic," Deadline.com's Ross A. Lincoln wrote. "He then embarked on a prolific stage career with many appearances in productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Round House Theatre, and the Royal Court Theatre."
Terry's television work was big in England, including such series as "Covington Cross," "Foyle’s War," "MI-5," "Agatha Christie's Marple," and "Dr. Who."
Variety said Terry's other film credits included parts in "Déjà Vu" in 1985, "The Last of England," in 1988, "War Requiem" in 1989, "Edward II" in 1991, "Blue" in 1993, and "Feardotcom" in 2002.
Fellow actors and fans expressed their sympathies on social media after word spread of Terry's death.
