Disney is in early talks to produce a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, with “Billy Elliot” and “The Hours” director Stephen Daldry as a possible director for the film.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that no script yet exists for the project based on Luke Skywalker's mentor, and that if a deal is reached, Daldry would be in charge of development and writing with Lucasfilm.

An Obi-Wan Kenobi movie would join last year’s "Rogue One" and the upcoming Han Solo standalone outside the trilogies but still part of the overall "Star Wars" universe.

Hollywood Reporter columnist Graeme McMillan speculated that the film would focus on the years when Kenobi was hiding out in the desert of Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker, but no official details were available about the movie.

Although Ewan McGregor has not yet been asked to play Kenobi, he told Entertainment Weekly in April that he would “be happy to” come back as Kenobi for such a film.

“It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes,” he said.

Twitter users had plenty to say about an Obi-Wan film and about McGregor playing the title character.
