Adding to his predicament of serving a 33-year sentence for armed robbery, former football great O.J. Simpson still owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, says the Internal Revenue Service and the state of California.
Simpson owes more than $515,000 in state and federal back taxes,
according to TMZ. In December the government filed a federal lien for nearly $180,000 for the years between 2007 and 2010. Additionally, California claims Simpson owes the state more than $318,000 for 2000.
The federal lien comes only months after his Florida home was foreclosed on in 2012.
Known for his ability on the gridiron, Simpson was a star college running back who after winning the Heisman trophy went on to play for the Buffalo Bills.
In June 1994, Simpson's image was forever altered when his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were found brutally stabbed to death outside Brown's Los Angeles-area condominium.
Simpson was charged with their murder, but after a highly-publicized 16-month trial a jury found him not guilty in both murders.
In a 1997 civil trial, a jury unanimously found Simpson liable for the wrongful deaths of his ex-wife and Goldman. Simpson was ordered by the court to pay $33.5 million to the families of Brown and Goldman. He has yet to pay this debt, despite a court-ordered seizure of most of his sports memorabilia, including his Heisman trophy.
In September 2007, Simpson led a group of men who robbed a sports memorabilia dealer in Las Vegas at gunpoint. Simpson later admitted to taking some items, claiming he was not stealing them but rather taking back things that had been stolen from him.
Simpson was found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to 33 years in prison. He is up for parole in 2016.
It's not clear whether sports memorabilia auctioned off by the government to pay Simpson's debts included the items stolen during the Las Vegas heist.
