Oreo has rolled out a new flavor for fans, a limited-edition cookie called Firework Oreos with rainbow specks of popping candy mixed in.
Firework Oreos reached stores on Monday with the candy mixed into the cookie's creme center, People magazine reported.
"After you chew for a bit, the popping candies begin to dissolve and fizzle in your mouth, sometimes for just a few second and sometimes, we found, for minutes afterward," Adam Campbell-Schmitt wrote for Food & Wine. "And if you don't hate Pop Rocks (or joy), it's a surprisingly enjoyable addition to an already delicious cookie.
"… But the general consensus remained that Oreos are darn good alone and popping candy is just a fun new way to enjoy them even more," he added.
In introducing the new Oreo, the company also announced that it will let fans pick out the next creation, using the hashtags #MyOreoCreation #Contest, People reported. The winner will receive a $500,000 prize – along with bragging rights.
Oreo posted a link to all the rules of the contest on its Facebook site, where the final judging of the contest will run through the spring and summer of 2018.
"Our newest limited-edition flavor got us thinking – if we can create a Firework Oreo cookie, what else could we create? And who better to ask than those who are already sharing their flavor and creation ideas," Madeline Vincent, Oreo brand manager, said, per People. "We've always loved hearing and seeing our fans' ideas and now we're thrilled to merge that passion and creativity with Oreo innovation to come up with future creations."
There was mixed reaction to the Firework Oreos on social media.
