Paul McCartney, Stephen Hawking Sign Petition Against Scottish Independence

Thursday, 18 September 2014 07:20 PM EDT ET

Paul McCartney, Stephen Hawking, and other big names put their signatures on a petition encouraging Scotland not to split from Britain, and like the rest of the world, they’ll soon know what the voters decided.

The petition from the Let’s Stay Together campaign was created for the purpose of letting Scotland voters know what others who don’t have a vote think about the idea of the two countries separating. It had more than 115,000 signatures when Scottish voters over the age of 16 cast their ballots yea or nay on Thursday.

While the vote was still too close to call, most polls have shown the campaign to stay together as narrowly leading, but those same pollsters thought thousands wouldn’t make up their minds until they stood in the booth, the Wall Street Journal said. Polls closed at 5 p.m. EDT.

McCartney owns a farm in Scotland.

The Let’s Stay Together campaign's "Letter to Scotland" offers a simple explanation for why people chose to sign: “The decision on whether to leave our shared country is, of course, absolutely yours alone. Nevertheless, that decision will have a huge effect on all of us in the rest of the United Kingdom. We want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you, and to express our hope that you will vote to renew them. What unites us is much greater than what divides us. Let's stay together."

On its blog, Let’s Stay Together wrote about McCartney’s signature: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to have Sir Paul's support for Let's Stay Together, as he is not only a national treasure but somebody who loves Scotland for what it is: a beautiful and inspiring country, and one that we are proud to count as part of the United Kingdom.”
