An Amtrak train derailed and sideswiped an NJ Transit train at Penn Station around 9 a.m. Friday morning in NYC as it traveled from Boston to Washington, causing delays and travel problems for thousands of commuters and travelers.
The Acela Express train was leaving Penn Station at slow speed when it derailed and sideswiped a NJ Transit train entering the station, CNN reported. The passengers on both trains exited without incident, and no major injuries were reported on either train. Two minor injuries were treated at the scene, said ABC 7.
Trains were rerouted around Penn Station for several hours after the derailment, and Amtrak resumed its service into Penn Station around 12:30 p.m., CNN reported. Passengers could travel to Newark or Secaucus and take PATH service into the city during the shutdown, USA Today reported.
ABC 7 reported travel delays are expected throughout the day Friday as the investigation into what caused the derailment continues.
According to passengers, an NJ Transit train reportedly bumped the Amtrak train and caused the derailment, USA Today reported. NJ Transit customers reported windows blowing out when the collision took place. Amtrak customers reported their train shaking as it derailed.
Penn Station is one of the busiest train stations in the country, with 10.4 million riders last year, CNN reported.
Annoyed commuters didn’t take the news of delays well and expressed their frustration on Twitter.
