Peter Vaughan, the British actor best known for the HBO series "Game of Thrones," died Tuesday at 93.
Vaughan, who played Maester Aemon, on the award-winning HBO fantasy series, made a career of playing hard-edged characters, such as police officers, secret agents, and authoritarian elders, the BBC News reported.
"This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10:30 this morning," Sally Long-Innes, Vaughan's agent, said, according to the BBC News. "He died peacefully with his family around him."
TMZ reported that Vaughan's career spanned 75 years, starting with British television and film. He played alongside the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Clive Owens, and Frank Sinatra, TMZ noted.
"Vaughan was a familiar face on British TV, with roles in the comedy 'Citizen Smith' and the drama 'Our Friends in the North,'" Matthew Weaver of The Guardian wrote. "But he was best known performing alongside Ronnie Barker in the prison sitcom 'Porridge,' playing Harry Grout, the head of HMP Slade's protection racket.
"He only appeared in three episodes of the 1970s comedy but is still remembered for a menacing performance as the prison kingpin running operations from his luxuriously appointed cell, complete with a budgerigar," Weaver wrote.
Vaughan told BBC London Radio in October that his favorite role was playing Ed in the original cast of Joe Orton's 1964 play "Entertaining Mr. Sloane," according to The Guardian.
