Phil Robertson's "radical idea" about transgender people and which bathroom they should use was circulated in an email to conservatives this past weekend, sparking controversy.
Robertson, the founder of the million-dollar Duck Commander business and star of A&E's "Duck Dynasty," waded into the controversy in a message issued by Citizens United.
"This is Phil Robertson from Duck Commander and I've got a radical idea," he said in the email,
according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Men should use the men's bathroom and women should use the women's bathroom."
"Just because a man may 'feel' like a woman doesn't mean he should be able to share a bathroom with my daughter, or yours. That used to be called common sense. Now it's called bigoted," Robertson added.
In North Carolina, the newly passed Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, also known as House Bill 2, bans individuals from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex,
CNN reported.
In response to the law, artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr have canceled concerts in the state, PayPal cancelled plans to expand its business there, and the U.S. Justice Department and the state have filed competing lawsuits against each other over the legislation,
noted National Public Radio.
Robertson, who has
previously weighed in on LGBT issues in a 2013 GQ article that got him briefly suspended from "Duck Dynasty," takes North Carolina's side in the ongoing battle.
Citizens United is best known for the anti-Hillary Clinton documentary "Hillary: The Movie," which was blocked by the Federal Election Commission and eventually led to a historic U.S. Supreme Court decision on campaign financing,
noted Forbes.
Comments on social media about Robertson's comments were predictably mixed.
