A Philadelphia-bound flight from Athens, Greece, was hit by severe turbulence before landing safely Sunday, injuring 10 people on the airplane.
American Airlines Flight 759 experienced the turbulence some 35 to 40 minutes before landing at Philadelphia International Airport. Three passengers and seven crew members were taken to a hospital after it landed, NBC affiliate WCAU-TV reported.
"I was looking forward and I just saw everything just move upwards about four feet," passenger Alex Ehmke told NBC News. "So I saw drinks, you know, flying up against walls and up on the ceiling. The gentleman directly behind us and diagonally behind us hit the ceiling himself."
The turbulence occurred while the airliner was flying over the North Atlantic Ocean, the FAA said, according to WCAU-TV. One passenger, Ervin Fang told the television station that the plane remained on the tarmac for about 40 minutes after landing so emergency personnel could respond. He also posted on social media about the event in its aftermath.
"We are taking care of our passengers and our crew members at this time and want to thank our team members for keeping our passengers safe," an American Airlines representative wrote after the plane landed, WCAU reported.
Jessica Huseman, a national politics reporter for ProPublica, was on the flight and posted photos on social media as well.
