With holiday shopping just around the corner, the souped-up PlayStation 4 hit stores Friday for a retail price of $399.

The latest Sony video game system has a sleek, black design with an almost stealth fighter-like appearance. Powered by the Advanced Micro Device's "Jaguar" chip, the PlayStation 4 employs a Radeon Graphics Core Next engine, which improves the game system's processing speed and thereby allows for faster play by users, CBS News reported.

Other upgrades in the PS4 include a built-in 500-gigabyte hard drive and 1080 pixel screen resolution that runs at 60 frames per second. It also comes with a DualShock 4 controller that has fuller handles, concave triggers, and a textured surface that provides an improved grip.

EndGadget.com's Ben Gilbert, who spent 48 hours testing the PS4 earlier this week, wrote on his blog that the "DualShock 4 is the best gamepad Sony's ever created."

Accompany the launch of the new system, Sony is also releasing at least 26 games, including "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag," "Call of Duty: Ghosts," and "Killzone: Shadow Fall," CBS News reported.

The release of Sony's latest video game system was preceded by a New York City launch party Thursday night at the Standard Hotel, where dedicated gamers were given a sneak peak of the new device before it could be purchased.

With the Christmas shopping season just around the bend, reports are already surfacing of massive lines forming at electronic retail stores like Best Buy where people are sacrificing their time to purchase the new system before it potentially runs out of stock.

According to CBS News, the PlayStation 4 is already being listed on eBay for in some cases as much as $10,000 in anticipation that the video game system will sell out and some individuals will succumb to paying the inflated prices to ensure they have it for themselves or a loved one this Holiday season.

In response to Sony's PS4, Microsoft will be releasing its latest video game console, the Xbox One, on Nov. 22 for a retail price of $499.
