Sony PlayStation games can soon be played without a console under a deal that will allow users to stream games from the Internet onto Samsung televisions.

According to CNET.com, the web-based service called PlayStation Now should be available the first half of 2015 in the United States and Canada.

"You do need a Sony Dualshock controller, but once that's plugged in all you have to do is fire up an app on the TV and you can choose from over 200 PS3 games to start playing immediately," reported Rich Trenholm of CNET.com.

"Games are streamed from the cloud so there's no need for downloads. You can play games online against friends and save your progress in the cloud ready to pick up next time where you left off. Streaming does mean lag could be an issue, however, so you'll have to make sure your Internet connection is fast enough to do the game justice," Treholm wrote.

PlayStation Now will offer only PlayStation 3 games, but more games will be added later, according to The Verge.com. PlayStation 3 has more than 200 games available.

"Partnering with Samsung is a key step toward realizing this vision, as we can reach a broader audience of consumers who may not own a PlayStation console to show them why gaming with PlayStation is such a unique and amazing experience," according to Masayasu Ito, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment.

PlayStation Now demonstrations on Samsung televisions will take place at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9, noted The Verge.

"PlayStation Now provides a new dimension to Samsung Smart TVs that consumers have been looking for – blockbuster PS3 games accessed through an intuitive interface that makes it easy to discover and play great gaming experiences," said Youngchan Kim, vice president of Samsung Electronics, according to PC magazine. "We are excited to collaborate with PlayStation to deliver even more entertainment value to our Smart TV platform."
