A pregnant woman who survived a Fourth of July lightning strike in her front yard was rushed to the hospital and delivered her baby by emergecy C-section.

Kimberly Samantha Rose Gordon was born at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque after her parents, Kendra Villanueva and Ian Gordon, were both recovering from a lightning strike, according to KRQE-TV.

The couple said they were watching fireworks at their home in Albuquerque at the time of the lightning strike, according to KRQE.

"We were actually going inside because we heard the lightning and the thunder," Ian Gordon told KRQE about himself and Villanueva, who was two weeks away from her due date. "The next thing we know, we woke up on the ground and everybody was just trying to keep us calm."

Albuquerque firefighters were on a service call nearby and quickly arrived to render aid to the couple, fire officials told KRQE.

"They were both awake and looking at us," Albuquerque fire Lt. Ryan Perry told the television station. "They were dazed and confused, but we knew that there were underlying injuries that we possibly couldn't see that we needed to treat quickly and get them to the hospital."

Doctors told KRQE that the couple faces long-term muscle spasms and Gordon has a damaged ear drum from the lightning strike. They said baby Gordon is doing well.

KRQE wrote that the Albuquerque Fire Department recently honored the 15 first responders who assisted the couple and got them to the hospital.

Deaths from lightning strikes have slowly decreased around the country, according to the National Weather Service, falling from 48 fatalities in 2006 to 28 deaths in 2012.
