Prince William opened up about Prince George and life's new challenges in one of his first public appearances since becoming a royal father: It's royally exhausting.

Speaking to the crowd Wednesday in Anglesey at the island's annual agricultural show, the prince likened being a parent to his time in the Royal Air Force.

"I have to say that I thought Search and Rescue duties over Snowdonia were physically and mentally demanding, but looking after a 3-week-old baby is up there!" CBS News quoted the prince as saying.

The second in line to the British throne also apologized that his wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and son, Prince George Alexander Louis, couldn't attend the event.

The two 31-year-olds welcomed their son July 22
, and have mostly stayed out of the public eye over the past few weeks, save for Prince William's appearance Aug. 3 at a charity polo match.

"She and George would have loved to have been here," William said. "He's pretty loud and of course extremely good-looking."

William amused the crowd with one-liners and his admission that his family has endured a "few sleepless nights," but said the boy is "sleeping much better now." He even briefly spoke to them in Welsh.

The Duke of Cambridge returned to active duty in Anglesey last week after a two-week paternity leave. The family is staying at Middleton's family home in Bucklebury, about 50 miles from their official residence at Kensington Palace.

William also said an early goodbye to Anglesey.

"I know that I speak for Catherine when I say that I have never in my life known somewhere as beautiful and as welcoming as Anglesey," he told the crowd, CBS News reported. "I know that both of us will miss it terribly when my Search and Rescue tour of duty comes to an end next month and we have to move elsewhere. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making my wife and me so welcome when we arrived here, as you do thousands of visitors each year."

On the calendar already is a trip to Australia and New Zealand in the spring of 2014, according to Us Weekly. Thirty years earlier, his parents, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, brought him Australia when he was 9 months old.
