Princess Diana believed her marriage to Prince Charles had gone down the drain following the birth of their second child, Prince Harry, and a rumored joke Charles told about the baby was supposed to have broken Diana’s heart.
All this was revealed in Andrew Morton's “Diana: Her True Story,” which is being republished with a transcript of “secret tapes” that contain audio recordings from the princess herself.
The Daily Mail has been running extracts of the “secret Diana tapes” and, in a recent excerpt, the heartbreaking joke came out:
“I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan,” Princess Diana said.
“Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy and I didn’t tell him.”
Prince Charles first comment upon seeing Prince Harry for the first time was reported to be “Oh God, it’s a boy”.
His second remark, “and he’s even got red hair,” was enough to break Princess Diana’s heart.
Following that, Princess Diana said, “something inside me closed off. By then, I knew Charles had gone back to his lady ( Camilla Parker Bowles), but somehow we’d managed to have Harry.”
It’s further reported that, at the christening, Prince Charles told Princess Diana’s mother that they were deeply disappointed that Prince Harry was a boy.
PopSugar noted how, after all these years, Prince Charles desire for a baby girl must have remained strong. When speaking about the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015, he said “I was hoping for a granddaughter — someone to look after me when I am very old.”
He went on to state how thrilled he was for the birth of the princess.
