Python in Couch: Woman Finds 4-Foot-Long Snake Living in Her Sofa

Unlike most people who just find spare change in their couch cushions, a Michigan woman last week discovered a 4-foot snake living in a sofa she picked up curbside two months ago, Grand Rapid’s WZZM 13 reported.

Holly Wright said that the snake started to slither out from under the sofa. She and her boyfriend videotaped it when they saw it.

“It was very lethargic,” she told WZZM. “It didn't really react or hiss, but when we poked it with a coat hanger it coiled up a little bit, so at that point we flipped the couch over.”

Wright said they cut into the side of the sofa to get the snake out but it died before they could take it to a vet.

Wright told WZZM that she picked the couch up outside a Heritage Hill home, and she cleaned it when she got it home.

“We smelled it and everything; it looked OK. We peeled off the cushions, cleaned it up, never saw anything,” Wright said. “It's been living in the couch for like two months in my bedroom and I had no idea. It was quite cold in the room, there was no food for the snake and I think it came out of the couch because it was dying.”

While most people are probably shuddering at the thought of a snake in their home, Wright told WZZM she actually felt terrible for the snake.

“Funny, my room almost feels a little empty now. It's been really sad actually to realize all this time I was in proximity to that animal (that) was probably suffering,” she said.

KSDK reported that the snake was a python, although at first Wright believed it was a boa constrictor.
