A rhinoceros attack at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, England, left a zookeeper seriously injured this week.
The 2 ton rhino cornered the zookeeper inside the
Asian rhino enclosure Wednesday, NBC News reported. The man, who was found in water by colleagues, had serious injuries to his chest, abdomen, and pelvis and was later listed in serious but stable condition.
The zookeeper, who is in his 50s, was feeding the rhinos at the time of the
attack, the Daily Mail reported.
The animal that reportedly attacked the zookeeper is a Nepalese gray male rhino named Ajang, who was born in 2010.
An investigation of the incident is under way, David Field, zoological director of the
Zoological Society of London, said, according to the BBC.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a statement condemning the captivity of animals.
"These deeply deprived and frustrated animals are ticking timebombs. We need to stop supporting animal prisons and instead protect animals in their natural habitats," the statement read.
Twitter users shared mixed reactions about the rhinoceros attack.
