Did the seller of a royal wedding souvenir plate really confuse Ed Sheeran for Prince Harry, so that the freckled red-haired face appearing next Meghan Markle is a pop star and not a prince?
The plate is available on the online marketplace Etsy ahead of the royal wedding at Windsor Castle in May. While royal watchers think the face swap is a hilarious mistake, the seller claims it was an intentional joke, The Daily Mail reported.
Regardless, the plate appears to be a hot item.
“Due to unprecedented demand, I am now taking pre-orders and the plates will be ready for dispatch from April 20,” said the seller, Lucy Bryant of ModernChintz.
Bryant apparently didn’t get the joke when describing the item.
She encouraged royal fans to “celebrate THE wedding of the year with this beautiful china plate featuring the portraits of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Whether you choose to eat your toast and Marmite (Harry’s favourite snack*) from, or hang it on your wall, this plate won’t fail to raise a smile and evoke pride in our country’s most cherished couple.”
The plate was first spotted by former royal chef Darren McGrady, who shared a snap of it to Twitter with the caption:
“Loving all the #PrinceHarry and #MeghanMarkle memorabilia. Just think some companies should do a little more research first.”
Bryant later explained that the plate was inspired by a commemorative mug doing the rounds in 2011, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got married, but rather include the image of Prince William, it featured Prince William instead.
“I bought a Kate/Wills mug when they got married and when it arrived, it was a pic of Harry instead of William,” she said, per The Daily Mail.
“It inspired me to do something similar... and when I was thinking of a random redhead, I thought Ed would be perfect. It's been pretty popular!”
