Connecticut woman Kathleen Danise was injured in an unexplained beach explosion on Saturday at Salty Brine beach in Rhode Island, and authorities are now investigating.
Daniese, 60, suffered a concussion, two broken ribs, and bruises when she was launched out of her beach chair "five feet up in the air" and "landed on her face," as witness Michele Martin
described the incident for ABC News.
"She was in shock, couldn't talk at all," Martin added.
Daniese said in a Sunday interview, the same day she was released from the hospital, that she was reading a book when the explosion happened.
"We watched a gentleman get ready to go scuba diving. He was putting on his scuba diving gear, and that's the last thing I remember," she said.
Larry Mouradjian, associate director of natural resources at the state Department of Environmental Management, said that the explosion could have been a "possible natural event."
"There was some ground disturbance. There were fissures created from an eruption from the ground," he said.
According to The Boston Globe, Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell with the Rhode Island State Police said in a statement that "no evidence indicated any type of an explosive device" was involved in the explosion.
"The investigation included physical searches, K-9 searches and numerous interviews that corroborated initial reports of a loud bang," he added. The beach was evacuated Saturday, and reopened on Sunday.
