A hit-and-run incident in San Francisco has left one person dead and four more injured, three of them seriously.
The hit-and-run occurred Wednesday around 10 a.m. when a man driving a van got into a dispute with a group of five other men, according to witnesses, CBS News reported. The man reportedly got out of the van and chased the group with a hatchet, but they disarmed him and forced him back into the van, at which time he drove onto the sidewalk and into the group.
The incident took place in an industrial area known as the Dogpatch neighborhood, CBS News said. Another witness characterized the incident as a “turf discussion,” and police said it was an isolated incident, not terrorism, and that the public is not at risk.
The driver fled the scene and has not been found, although police are searching for him. He reportedly looked to be living in the van, which was a white GMC with the numbers 16 in the license plate.
SFGate reported police are not sure whether the driver intentionally hit the pedestrians or whether they were fighting amongst themselves rather than with the driver.
