Giants fans celebrating the team’s World Series win rioted in San Francisco Wednesday, wreaking havoc with bonfires, graffiti, and ending the night with 40 arrests and two shootings.
Police arrested 29 people for being drunk in public, three for assault, and
two for illegal gun possession, the SF Gate said. Many of those arrested were from outside San Francisco, according to police Chief Greg Suhr.
“To the fans who came to San Francisco and celebrated like we’ve been there before, God bless ya, hope you had a good time,” Suhr said at a news conference. “To the clowns that came to San Francisco to act out, I guess you just don’t know what it’s like to have a good time without being a jerk, and we had a lot of them last night.”
Suhr told Bay Area NBC police presence was beefed up for the night by about 20 percent. Many officers, including Suhr, were hit by bottles thrown at them from the crowds.
Photos of the violence were tweeted and put on Instagram:
“Ninety-nine percent of the fans were well-behaved but about 100 near the ballpark and in the Mission district marred the party,” Suhr told the Bay Area NBC News. He also said that this riot seemed to do less damage than the one that occurred after the Giants won in 2012.
