Actress Sandra Bullock has donated $1 million to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey relief effort.
Bullock has a home in Austin, Texas and has been a longtime supporter of the American Red Cross, People reported.
"This is an incredible gift," American Red Cross Vice President of Communications Elizabeth Penniman said of the donation, People reported. "Having someone like Sandra Bullock make this kind of commitment, it helps bring people together and open their hearts and be even more generous."
Bullock said the disaster brought about by Harvey should bring Americans together even during times when they may be extremely polarized.
“There are no politics in eight feet of water,” Bullock said, People reported. “There are human beings in eight feet of water.”
Bullock has a history of donating to humanitarian aid projects.
Other celebrities donating to Harvey relief efforts include Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kim Kardashian West, and Nicki Minaj. Disney has donated $1 million to the Red Cross relief efforts, and Facebook said it would match donations of up to $1 million that are made on its website.
“The entertainment community has been so supportive to the Red Cross in response to Hurricane Harvey, and we are so grateful,” a Red Cross spokesperson said, Variety reported.
Harvey initially hit the coast of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane. It was quickly downgraded to a tropical storm but stalled over southeast Texas and dumped more than 30 inches of rain on Houston and other cities in the region, causing widespread flooding.
“I’m just grateful I can do it,” Bullock said of her donation, People reported. “We all have to do our part.”
