British soprano Sarah Brightman is planning to sing in space during a trip to the International Space Station in September.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, Brightman’s ex-husband, is helping her create a
new song for the adventure, The Associated Press reported.
“I am trying to find a piece which is beautiful and simple in its message, as well as not too complicated to sing,” said Brightman, 54, who is well-known for her role in the musical “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Brightman said they are “taking it slowly” in
deciding what she will sing, The Independent reported.
“Singing in micro-gravity is very difficult. I don’t want to promise too much,” she said.
Russian cosmonaut Colonel Sergey Volkov will command the mission aboard the Russian Soyuz rocket, The Independent said.
Brightman wouldn’t disclose the cost but reportedly will pay more than $50 million for the 10-day trip.
She is the eighth space tourist and follows Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who made the trip in 2009.
"It's been an unusual path that has taken me to this point and it hasn't been an easy journey,”
Brightman said, according to the BBC. "I've found out a lot about myself."
Brightman said she has dreamed of going to space since watching the 1969 moon landing as a child.
