A television critic for Variety is getting plenty of heat for a review in which he criticizes comedian Sarah Silverman for being too raunchy in an upcoming HBO special.

“Despite all manner of career-friendly gifts — from her looks to solid acting chops — she’s limited herself by appearing determined to prove she can be as dirty and distasteful as the boys,” Brian Lowery wrote in his Variety review of Silverman’s “We Are Miracles” program, which airs Nov. 23.

It didn’t take long for the fallout to begin.

“It’s easy to be mad at Lowery for his condescending nonsense, but I’m actually in awe of his ability to hit nearly every trope of the misogynist blowhard in a mere 500-word piece,” wrote Amanda Marcotte at Slate.com.

Esther Zuckerman of TheWire.com was just as biting.

“Silverman’s special is dirty,” she wrote. “Which raises the question: Where has Lowry been? And why does he think she needs to up and change for some immeasurable form of mainstream success beyond the considerable mainstream success she already had? Is it because he doesn’t like women saying dirty things and doesn’t think anyone else does either?”

Even Silverman took issue with the Lowery piece, posting this on Twitter:

Silverman has had a successful comic and acting career for more than two decades and once served as a writer and performer on "Saturday Night Live." She also starred in "The Sarah Silverman Program" for three years on Comedy Central and has appeared in a number of films, including a small role in “School of Rock.”

Lowery isn’t impressed, writing, “The HBO special — in which Silverman plays to a 39-seat room, the most intimate of standup settings — offers a pretty good metaphor for her career, opting for the intimacy of a side room instead of the main stage.”

Comments on Twitter weren’t too fond of Lowery’s piece in Variety.
