Serena Williams will join the board of SurveyMonkey, in a move to add diversity to the Silicon Valley technology industry.
"I feel like diversity is something I speak to," the tennis star told The Associated Press. "Change is always happening, change is always building. What is important to me is to be at the forefront of the change and to make it easier for the next person that comes behind me."
"I have been really interested in getting involved in Silicon Valley for years, so I have been kind of in the wading waters," Williams added. "Now, I am jumping into the deep end of the pool. When I do something, I go all out."
This comes as tech companies in Silicon Valley have faced criticism for "sexism and a lack of diversity" in the workplace, according to BBC News.
Williams, who has 39 Grand Slam titles, has said before that she's not been happy that most good-paying jobs in the tech industry are held by white and Asian men, BBC News noted.
According to SurveyMonkey, only 27 percent of its tech jobs are filled by women and just 14 percent of those women are black.
"My focus is to bring change agents around the table who can open our eyes," CEO Zander Lurie said, according to the AP.
Along with the diversity issue, 60 percent of women working in Silicon Valley have experienced unwanted sexual advances, according to BBC News.
Anne-Marie Imafidon, a leading campaigner in the UK, who has made efforts to get more girls involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, is happy to see Williams join the board.
"As a black woman, it is refreshing to see such a public figure take on this role. The celeb factor could be a good one and someone like her can change the social norm," Imafidon said, according to BBC News.
