Seth Meyers is set to host the 2018 Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Thursday. The show reportedly almost went without a host because big names have become gun shy about doing awards show that may prove controversial.

The “Late Night” host is following in the footsteps of fellow comics Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Fallon, who have all acted as emcee in the past.

HFPA President Meher Tatna said the association was excited to have Meyers host the 75th edition of the Annual Golden Globe Awards.

“With his natural comedic wit and innate ability to charm audiences, Seth will help us carry on the celebratory tradition of recognizing the best in television and film at the Party of the Year.”

Up until this week, there has been speculation as to whether the show would run without a host, Entertainment Tonight noted.

Although the ideas of the Golden Globes airing without a host might seem unusual in this age of one awards show after another, the event only saw its first guest emcee, Ricky Gervais, take to the stage in 2010.

Three years later Poehler took over hosting duties, followed by Fey another three years later. Gervais reprised his role as emcee in 2016 and Fallon took up the role this year.

According to Variety, Meyers was approached for the position several weeks ago but did not commit until a few days ago.

The role of host had also been offered to Ellen DeGeneres and Tiffany Haddish, as well as Fey and Poehler, who were reluctant to return to the stage.

Insiders told Variety that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get big stars to commit to hosting events such as the Golden Globes.

According to the report, celebrities have become weary of participating in public performances that could draw harsh criticism on social media.

The 75thAnnual Golden Globe Awards presentation will take place on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, and the ceremony will air on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
