Sharista Giles of Tennessee awoke from a coma to learn her baby was born months earlier while she was unconscious.
A car accident in early December left 20-year-old Giles, who was
five months pregnant at the time, in a coma, ABC News reported.
The baby boy, nicknamed “Baby L,” was delivered prematurely in January, and doctors said Giles probably would never wake up.
Her family moved her to the Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center in March, where she awoke Wednesday, ABC News said. Family members rushed to her side and her father showed her a picture of the baby.
"He showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture," Beverly Giles, Sharista’s aunt, said. "When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again."
The family posted about the event on their Facebook page.
The baby, who now weighs 6 pounds, 4 ounces,
remains in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, WATE-TV reported.
Family members will bring him to see his mother when he is ready to leave the hospital.
Doctors say it is too soon to know a
prognosis for the young mother, KFOR-TV reported.
A
GoFundMe page had raised more than $4,400 for medical bills and other expenses as of Friday afternoon.
