Sheryl Sandberg's 'Lean In' Lands Her Time Cover

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, appears on the cover of Time Magazine this week to discuss her new book, women in the workplace, and her mission to reboot feminism.

Sandberg, 43, joined Facebook in 2008 after working at Google and previously serving as chief of staff for the U.S. Treasury Department. Her Time cover story is part of her campaign to promote her new memoir, "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead," which she calls "sort of feminist manifesto," deals with business leadership and the lack of women in senior positions.

Ironically, Sandberg told Time she has little desire to take the top position of CEO at Facebook and passed on an offer to serve as the top executive at LinkedIn before joining the social networking company.

"Ironically, having written a book about women and leadership, having, like, the top leadership role is not the most important thing to me," she told Time. "I could have done that on the way out of Google. I had those offers."

Sandberg also spoke about Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's recent decision to end telecommuting and work-from-home options for her employees. Sandberg told Time she thinks Mayer received more backlash for her policy because she's a woman.

"No one knows what happened there," Sandberg said. "I think flexibility is important for women and for men. But there are some jobs that are super flexible and some that aren't."

Sheryl Sandberg was also appointed to Facebook's board in June 2012, becoming the first woman on the all-men panel.

"Sheryl has been my partner in running Facebook and has been central to our growth and success over the years," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement at the time of Sandberg's appointment. "Her understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit for our board."
