Sinead O'Connor, the Irish singer known for her 1990 hit "Nothing Compares 2 U," was hospitalized last week with what was initially diagnosed as an abdominal aneurysm.

O'Connor's sister took her to a local hospital last Tuesday after the singer reportedly fell ill. She was subsequently transferred to another medical facility, where attending physicians diagnosed her with kidney stones and discharged her from the hospital on Friday, MSN.com reported.

Two days later she returned to the hospital, suffering severe pain, leading to her receive a prescription for the powerful drug Demerol, Ireland's Independent newspaper reported.

"I get seized by pain that feels like all my back ribs and all front are broken," O'Connor wrote on her blog, adding that it was the "most physically traumatic experience I’ve ever had that didn’t result in a baby."

"Literally as if someone stamped all over me and smashed them, or as if someone beat the s— out of me," O'Connor added.

The pain and the initial confusion surrounding her condition led the 47-year-old Irish singer to reportedly begin planning for her funeral.

"We started making plans [in case] I croak between Friday night and Saturday night, how I don’t want the kids seeing my body and such?" O'Connor continued on her blog. The Irish singer has four children from four marriages.

In an interview with A&E last Thursday, O'Connor said the doctor told her that it wasn't the kidney stones causing the severe pains.

"The doctor asks me have I been upset about anything, I sob quietly and say, 'Yes, something extremely traumatic happened about a week ago.' He says, 'There’s your problem,'" O'Connor said.

That trauma that apparently caused the pain was not reported.

The Irish singer made news last fall for writing an open letter to pop star Miley Cyrus
in response to a Rolling Stone interview in which Cyrus compared her "Wrecking Ball" video to O'Connor's 1992 video for "Nothing Compares 2 U."

O'Connor advised the 20-year-old Cyrus not to "prostitute" herself, and used strong language to implore the star to tone down her well-publicized sexual antics.

Cyrus responded by bashing the singer's age in a series of tweets. In the exchange, the 46-year-old O'Connor revealed she suffers from bipolar disorder.

In addition to her hit 1990 single, O'Connor is known for tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a "Saturday Night Live" appearance two years later.
