A soldier allegedly killed a New York state trooper and a woman said to be the soldier's wife during a domestic incident in Theresa, New York, on Sunday.

Trooper Joel R. Davis, 36, was responding to a domestic incident just before 8 p.m. on County Route 46 where shots had been fired when he was fired upon as he approached the residence, the New York Daily News reported. Davis was transported to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where he died.

Davis was shot once and killed in the incident along with Nichole Walters, 27, WNYF-TV reported. A second woman near the home was shot and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, per the television station.

Justin Walters, 32, surrendered in the driveway of the home and was taken into custody, the Watertown Daily Times reported. The newspaper said that Walters was an active duty U.S. Army soldier stationed at nearby Fort Drum, in Jefferson County, New York.

Media accounts early Monday did not say what Walters has been charged with in the incident.

The newspaper said that a toddler living in the Walters home is currently with Jefferson County Child Protective Services.

Davis graduated from the 199th session of the Basic School on May 29, 2013, and was originally assigned to Troop D in Watertown, before receiving his current assignment at Philadelphia, New York, wrote WNYF-TV, He is survived by his wife and three children.

Davis's brother, Josh Davis, is a Watertown police officer, stated WNYF-TV.

"The entire New York family grieves today for Trooper Joel Davis, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday night in Theresa, Jefferson County," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Monday.

"Trooper Davis served as a member of the New York State Police for four years and his death is yet another sad reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day in order to protect our communities and serve the residents of this great state. I ask all New Yorkers to keep Trooper Davis' family, loved ones and colleagues in the state police in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time," Cuomo continued.
