Steph Curry, one of the best players in the NBA, found himself talking politics this week after responding negatively to Under Amour CEO Kevin Plank calling President Donald Trump an "asset."
Curry, the sharp-shooting guard for the Golden State Warriors, is one of Under Armour's most popular endorsers, the the San Jose Mercury News noted, but appeared to separate himself from Plank when it comes to the president.
During an interview on CNBC's "Halftime Report" this week, Plank called Trump a "real asset" for U.S. businesses and said he was "highly passionate." CNBC wrote that Plank had met with the president to talk about jobs in the country as part of his American Manufacturing Council.
"I agree with that description if you remove the 'et,'" Curry said in response to Plank's "asset" remark about Trump, according to the Mercury News.
Under Amour issued a statement clarifying Plank's position as business driven and not political, the Mercury News noted.
"We engage in policy, not politics," the company said in its statement, according to the Mercury News. "We believe in advocating for fair trade, an inclusive immigration policy that welcomes the best and the brightest and those seeking opportunity in the great tradition of our country, and tax reform that drives hiring to help create new jobs globally, across America and in Baltimore.
"We have teammates from different religions, races, nationalities, genders and sexual orientations; different ages, life experiences and opinions. This is the core of our company. At Under Armour, our diversity is our strength, and we will continue to advocate for policies that Protect Our House, our business, our team, and our community," the statement continued.
Curry told the Mercury News on Wednesday that after talking directly with Plank about his comments, he felt more comfortable about Under Armour's position.
"I spent all day yesterday on the phone with countless people at Under Armour, countless people in Kevin Plank's camp, my team, trying to understand what was going on and where everybody stood on the issue. Based off the release that KP sent out this morning, and what he told me last night, that's the Under Armour that I know. That's the brand I know he's built and one that, as of Wednesday afternoon, is something that I'm standing on."
Curry is a friend of President Barack Obama and has played golf with him, Yahoo Sports reported. He was involved in Obama's My Brother's Keeper initiative and wore sneakers during a game in January honoring him.
