Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon said she was proud her 23-year-old son Miles Robbins can see beyond "gender stereotypes" and can display that publicly, including wearing dresses.
Sarandon, 68, told
People magazine that Robbins is involved with a musical group that thinks along the same lines.
"My son Miles is a musician and a DJ and sometimes when his band performs they all wear dresses, and he has long hair," said Sarandon. "I wanted to raise my kids in New York because, as a privileged kid, I think you can become very isolated and at least if you're privileged, you should understand you're privileged, and not take it for granted."
Miles Robbins is one of two children Sarandon had with actor Tim Robbins. She had a daughter, actress Eva Amurri Martino, with Italian filmmaker Franco Amurri.
"As a mother, I know how difficult it is to survive the teenage years intact and the socialization process – if you step out of line, it's so difficult," said Sarandon. "And there are so many kids these days who are questioning, gay or transgender, who have a very tough time and it could be very dangerous for them."
Sarandon became a grandmother last year when Martino gave birth to a baby girl with her husband, sports commentator Kyle Martino.
