A swastika drizzled in butter on a McDonald's bun stunned a North Carolina customer recently when she went to put mayonnaise on her chicken sandwich.

Charleigh Matice told WCTI-TV in a report that aired Sunday that she purchased the sandwich at the drive-thru of a McDonald's restaurant in Morehead City, North Carolina.

"Is this a joke?" Matice thought when she opened the bun and found the Nazi symbol. "Does somebody really think they're funny?"

Matice told the television station that she went into the restaurant to complain, but she felt something more should be done even after receiving her money back.

"Maybe it needs to be part of training, or maybe brought up more often so that people know that this is not okay," she said.

Dulcy Purcell, the owner of the McDonald's restaurant in question, issued an apology via email.

"We are very sorry for the service that our customers received, and to be clear we have terminated the employee who was involved," Purcell said in a statement, according to WCTI-TV. "We do not tolerate that kind of behavior at McDonald's, and it's not what we stand for personally as owners. It is about providing the best level of service and care to our customers, and anything less than that is unacceptable to us."

Matice told the television station that her father fought in World War II against the Germans and that she took the symbol seriously.

"Many, many people died under that symbol, because of it, and it's something that shouldn't be taken lightly," she said.
