Netflix will begin offering the comedy film “The Interview” to subscribers in the United States and Canada on Jan. 24.
The streaming video company made the announcement in an earnings report.
The film starring James Franco and Seth Rogen in a plot to assassinate North Korean President Kim Jong Un has been the subject of major controversy after Sony canceled its original release plans for the film in the wake of threats of violence by hackers.
Still, "The Interview" has made $40 million from box office, video on demand, and streaming services.
In a statement, Netflix said: "We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy ‘The Interview’ to our U.S. and Canadian members … just thirty days after it debuted in theaters and pay-per-view."
“The Interview” broke Sony’s Internet record with $15 million in sales and rentals during the first four days.
The cyberattack against Sony Pictures Entertainment included the release of internal emails and documents. U.S. officials tied North Korea to the attacks.
Twitter users shared mixed reactions.
