A plan by two Florida criminals went awry after one thief lay on the floor, having a fake heart attack, so his partner could roll a cart loaded with toys out of the store.
Instead of escaping with about $369 in merchandise, including a large box containing a motorized Barbie car, the two alleged thieves were caught on tape in their act of drama.
The alleged
thieves were identified as Tarus Scott, 30, and Genard Dupree, 27, The Ledger reported.
The two went to a Lake Wales, Florida, Wal-Mart on Tuesday where video surveillance cameras show Dupree lying on the floor with a hand to his chest. As people rushed to help Dupree, the video shows Scott leaving the store with the cart.
Once his cohort escaped, the video shows that Dupree made a quick recovery and left the store.
The Ledger reported that both men have arrest records; Scott served a 10-year sentence for armed robbery and Dupree “reportedly has 24 prior arrests and is on probation for theft.”
The Polk County sheriff said Dupree's heart attack wasn’t even convincing. “He didn’t even go down hard on the ground. He just kind of rolled around a little bit and
make sure he created some distraction," he said, Fox News reported.
The Ledger said both men were found and arrested on grand theft charges; sheriff’s officers said “neither man was cooperative.” They were identified from the videotape and arrested separately.
Although there was much disdain in the comments on news articles about the failed heart attack scam, some were giving the two men a few points:
