'Thor: The Dark World' Reviews Mediocre, But Still Encourage Seeing It

“Thor: The Dark World” hits theaters this week to mixed reviews, earning anywhere from a B- at CNN to a “wittier than the first movie” from The Atlantic.

Christopher Orr of The Atlantic said he was concerned about whether another Thor movie could hold up, but he was impressed with a “looser, loopier hybrid of science fiction and fantasy powered by a pair of magnetic performances and leavened with a number of truly witty moments.”

CNN’s Owen Gleiberman, however, thinks "The Dark World" failed to hold a candle to the God's first film.

“The first ‘Thor’ was directed by Kenneth Branagh with an elegant verve that made the special effects at once witty and spectacular,” he wrote. “Alan Taylor, who directed this sequel, is a prestige veteran of the small screen (‘Mad Men,’ ‘The Sopranos,’ ‘Game of Thrones’), but he brings little of that avid storytelling tightness to ‘The Dark World.’”

The caveat in most reviews seems to be that “Thor: The Dark World” may be a little light in certain areas, but it’s worth seeing.

“‘The Dark World’ is by no means a perfect movie, but it really doesn’t need to be: It’s tremendously fun and eminently worthwhile, warts and all,” Wired.com said. “If you’re already a Thor fan courtesy of either the comics or the first film, it’s a safe bet that you’ll enjoy ‘The Dark World.’”

Eighty-six percent of fans on Rotten Tomatoes said they like the movie, and like others, the website summed up, “It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but 'Thor: The Dark World' still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.”

The movie got a 65 percent on the Tomatometer.

And whether it’s a good movie or not, it’s always good for a few online jokes.
