South African comedian Trevor Noah was announced as Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" successor on Monday, but on Tuesday there was a growing backlash over Noah's Twitter account, which is filled with anti-Semitism and misogyny, critics said.

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency were the first to highlight Noah's tweets, and The New York Times reported that he responded to critics with a tweet on Tuesday morning, but soon backtracked.

"Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter," Noah tweeted just before 9 a.m. Eastern Time. The tweet was soon deleted.

Gathered below are a selection of controversial tweets from Noah, as well as people's reactions to them.
