A woman gave birth to twins with two different fathers, a paternity case in Passaic County, New Jersey, has revealed.

New Jersey Superior Court judge Sohail Mohammed recently ruled that the man named as father of the twin girls was only responsible for one of the babies, NJ.com reported this week.

The mother, identified only as “T.M.,” listed the man, identified as “A.S.,” as the father of her twins when applying for child support. A paternity case ensued when he objected and, throughout the course of the investigation, the woman admitted to having a sexual encounter with another man within a week of having had sex with “A.S."

A paternity test was ordered and found, shockingly, that "A.S." was the father of only one of the babies.

The case is the first in New Jersey and the third nationwide to reveal two fathers behind a single set of twins. The phenomenon occurs in about one out of every 13,000 reported paternity cases involving twins, NJ.com reported.

Sperm is viable for up to five days, making it possible for two eggs to be fertilized during separate sexual encounters in the same menstrual cycle, The New York Times reported.

Such incidences, known as superfecundation, have become more common with assistive reproductive technologies, The Times said.

“A.S.” was ordered to pay $28 per week in child support for his daughter, born in January 2013, NBC New York reported.

The odd story surprised Twitter users.
