A U.K. woman who ran into a cyclist with her car and fled the scene boasted about the hit-and-run on Twitter, spurring a slew of angry retweets and a police investigation.

Emma Way, 21, was driving through Norfolk, England, on Sunday and collided with a cyclist who was participating in a 100-mile race, knocking him off his bike. Later, she tweeted about the hit-and-run.

"Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier — I have right of way he doesn't even pay road tax! #bloodycyclists," the tweet read.

Way's tweet (which has since been deleted along with her account) drew more than 300 responses, including retweets to the Norfolk Police Department. The victim, Toby Hockley, even came forward after seeing the message.

"I was descending a hill ... and sticking to the left as the corner was blind. A car came round in the opposite direction going much too quickly to make the corner safely. It missed the rider in front of me but hit me. My right leg caught the front right wing. I was thrown up onto the bonnet, I hit the side of windscreen and the wing mirror. I bounced back off the car and went through a hedge for about 20 meters," Hockley, a chef, told cycling website road.cc. "I have a sore elbow, a bruised knee, nettle stings from riding through the hedge, but nothing serious."

Way told reporters she was driving carefully and didn't stop because she didn't think the cyclist was hurt. She later apologized for the incident.

"I posted a stupid tweet," Way told ITV Anglia News. "It was a spur-of-the-moment thing and I'm sorry. I didn't realize it would ever escalate to this. It's now national and I'm getting severely bad named."

Because of the hit-and-run tweet, Way has also been suspended from her job as a trainee at an accountancy firm. She has reportedly been interviewed by police but no arrest has been made.
