The U.K. government has been deemed Donald Trump-like after confirming plans to build a wall at Calais, France, a port city where migrants often attempt to cross the English Channel.
British Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill told the Commons Home Affairs Committee on Tuesday the wall project will begin soon.
“We’ve done the fence, now we are doing a wall,” he said.
The measurements of the so-called “Great Wall of Calais” might differ from Trump’s plans for a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, but the premise appears to be much of the same: Keep illegal immigrants out.
According to Newsweek, the wall is expected to reach 4 meters (a little more than 13 feet) in height and a kilometer in length, nearly two-thirds of a mile.
The wall is “aimed at containing migrants living in the ‘jungle’ camp,” an area where thousands of uprooted migrants attempting to get into Britain live in shabby conditions, Newsweek noted.
In addition, improved equipment at the port will help step up security.
There is currently a fence where the wall will be, but Goodwill said it hasn’t prevented migrants from getting through in the past.
The Calais wall project is part of a $23 million deal that took place between Britain and France earlier in the year. Construction is expected to start this month and CNN reported the wall should be finished by the end of this year.
