Actress Uma Thurman is rumored to have had major plastic surgery after she looked different from her usual self at Monday's red carpet premiere of her new miniseries "The Slap."
Many news outlets compared Thurman's new appearance to that of actress Renée Zellweger, who made headlines in October when she debuted her own new look on the red carpet at Elle’s Women in Hollywood Awards.
One clinician offered an opinion on Thurman's transformation.
"It looks as though she's had a recent lower blepharoplasty treatment, also known as eye bag removal. She isn't wearing any eyeliner or mascara, probably in order to avoid infection from the new surgery," Mark Norfolk, Clinical Director at Transform Cosmetic Surgery,
told The Daily Mail (UK).
"I would say that she's probably had a recent course of strong chemical peels as well as some dermal filler injected into the cheeks and nasal labial area; which is all contributing to this swollen-looking finish as it can have this effect immediately after undergoing these treatments. Her forehead is also very prominent and looks rather elongated, shiny, taut and line-free, which are all classic tell-tale signs of regular Botox use."
Many on social media ridiculed Thurman, saying she looked too overdone.
An opinion writer at The Daily Beast said that regardless of whether or not Thurman had plastic surgery, the hubbub over her red carpet appearance highlights Hollywood's unhealthy obsession with appearance.
"Perhaps it’s Botox, perhaps there has been surgery, perhaps it looks jarring to some," said the piece. "But the same papers and websites who profess such shock at these women’s changed faces also regularly regale us with tales of the latest plastic surgery procedures, Botox and filler treatments, and chemical peels. They want us to buy into this madness, yet revel in the celebrities who do it too obviously."
Some pointed out that recent Grammy-nominee Sia regularly hides her face during performances and red carpet walks, and has said she does so because she doesn't want to be criticized for her appearance.
