There were more U.S. and Canadian diplomats affected by Cuba sonic attacks than what was initially reported, CNN reported Sunday.
An unknown sonic weapon hit Havana in a series of attacks that began in mid-November and ended in the spring of 2017, forcing U.S. diplomats, Canadian diplomats, and their families to seek treatment for symptoms like nausea, headaches and hearing loss, according to CNN.
More than 10 U.S. diplomats and their families and about five Canadian diplomats were reportedly treated for symptoms and injuries related to the attacks, CNN reported, citing U.S. government officials.
"We are aware of unusual symptoms affecting Canadian and U.S. diplomatic personnel and their families in Havana," Canadian spokesperson Brianne Maxwell said in a statement earlier this month. "The government is actively working -- including with U.S. and Cuban authorities -- to ascertain the cause."
There's currently an ongoing investigation into the matter to find out who is responsible for these mystery attacks.
"We hold the Cuban authorities responsible for finding out who is carrying out these health attacks on not just our diplomats but, as you've seen now, there are other cases with other diplomats involved," said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, according to CNN.
"Cuba has never, nor would it ever, allow that the Cuban territory be used for any action against accredited diplomatic agents or their families, without exception," Cuba's government said, according to the network.
This comes as the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba is on the rocks after President Donald Trump placed restrictions on Cuba travel in June, The Hill noted.
Trump rolled back some of former President Barack Obama's opening to Cuba, which now makes it harder for people to travel to and from Cuba and negatively affects any business transactions between the U.S. and Cuba, The Los Angeles Times noted.
