The 20th annual Hollywood cover of Vanity Fair is a gorgeous, classy tableau of celebrities honoring the last year in film, from George Clooney and Julia Roberts to Lupita Nyong’o, Jared Leto, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the fold-out, three-page spread of 12 stars is creating quite a stir online. Many note the prominence of “people of color” on the cover after the style magazine has taken a hit for racial insensitivity.

Salon pointed out that the annual Vanity Fair cover is often criticized for “wildly favoring white performers,” but the magazine broke that trend this year.

“That’s a healthy and interesting mix of celebrities on every rung of the star system, from the megastar Roberts to the emerging Robbie, as well as more than just a group of white stars,” Salon said. “Compare this to the 2011 cover, in which only two of 15 cover subjects were nonwhite — none of them on the front fold, or the regrettable whites-only 2010 cover.”

Online, some expressed their jealousy that Julia Roberts, pictured as one of the only women on the cover wearing a huge smile, was draped across the lap of Idris Elba.
