A former Virginia Wesleyan College student has filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming she was raped in 2012 and the school allowed her attacker to voluntarily withdraw, which let the lacrosse player to transfer to another school.
Filed under the name “Jane Doe,” the lawsuit seeks $10 million, claiming that the college knew "female students faced an especially high risk of rape from lacrosse team members" and that "male students were drugging female students,
rendering them incapacitated and raping them," The Virginian-Pilot reported.
According to the lawsuit, the student went to a party where alcohol was served, The Virginian-Pilot reported. She left the party when she began to feel dizzy and lightheaded. A male student followed her and forced her into his dorm room, where she was raped and sodomized for five hours, the suit alleges. The lawsuit claims she was drugged and unable to fight back.
A security guard later "witnessed her bloody shorts, yet offered no assistance,"
WTKR-TV quoted the lawsuit.
School officials expelled the lacrosse player, but later allowed him to change his status to "voluntary withdrawal," the station reported.
The school has denied the claims against it.
"While the college sympathizes with Jane Doe, Virginia Wesleyan denies any allegation of improper conduct and will vigorously defend this lawsuit," the school’s lawyer told The Virginian-Pilot.
