Warren Buffett Coke Habit: Billionaire Consumes 5 Sugary Sodas a Day

Warren Buffett owns $16 million in Coca-Cola stock, but the world's top investor said this week he drinks enough Coke to make the investment worth it — at least five 12-ounce servings a day.

The Berkshire Hathaway chief executive officer, 84, revealed to Fortune what most would consider to be an unhealthy sugary habit this week when talking about the death of his friend, Coca-Cola president Don Keough.

"If I eat 2,700 calories a day, a quarter of that is Coca-Cola," Buffett said. "I drink at least five 12-ounce servings. I do it every day. I have three Cokes during the day and two at night. I'll have one at breakfast (with UTZ potato chips). I have a can right here. This morning, I had a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream."

The Washington Post said if we take Buffett at his word, the multi-billionaire is taking in eight times the sugar recommended by World Health Organization on a daily basis, and that's just with his Coke habit alone.

"And it's not as though Buffett stops there," The Post noted. "He also loves potato chips (Utz potato sticks, in particular), which he washes down with soda. And he has a soft spot for ice cream, which he admittedly eats for breakfast from time to time, too."

"If that all sounds crazy, well, it should, because Buffett, who turns 85 in August, is a remarkable outlier."

Buffett admitted to Fortune that his eating habits for his age are a little unorthodox, but there is a method to his eating madness.

"I checked the actuarial tables, and the lowest death rate is among 6-year-olds," Buffett told Fortune. "So I decided to eat like a 6-year-old. It's the safest course I can take."

No doubt that Buffett has plenty of money to buy as much Coke and UTZ potato chips he wants with the latest Forbes 400 ranking of the world's richest individuals ranking him at No. 2 only behind Bill Gates at $72.5 billion.

"At the age of 84 Warren Buffett is still at the top of his game both professionally and philanthropically," wrote Forbes at the time of the ranking. "The second-richest American's net worth continues to surge, despite his giving away billions, thanks to the juggernaut performance of Berkshire Hathaway."
