Comedian Will Ferrell promised Wednesday to “bite every German player” to show his commitment to the U.S. soccer team and his willingness to help out during a rallying speech at U.S. Soccer headquarters in Brazil.
Speaking in Recife, where the U.S. went up against Germany Thursday, Ferrell was (jokingly) introduced by U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati as a new U.S. soccer player. He played right into that introduction, offering, “I’m so honored to be playing tomorrow,” he told a screaming crowd. “I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not in the best shape. … [But] if the game gets close, I will bite the opponent. I will bite every German player if I have to.”

Ferrell’s comments, which referred to
Luis Suarez, Uruguay’s player who was banned for four months for biting opposing players, drew laughter and shouts.
In announcing that Ferrell would make an appearance at the headquarters, U.S. Soccer put up a Vine video of Ferrell posing proudly in his red, white, and blue, with the tag, “Special guest at #FanHQ tonight! He's ready for#USAvGER . #LetsDoThis”.
On Twitter, Ferrell’s comments rapidly made the online circuit and he gathered kudos for his ability to pep up the fans.
And some fans looked for him in the game.
Although the U.S. lost to Germany 1-0 Thursday, they still advance to the Round of 16.
