Will Smith, who boycotted last year’s Oscars over diversity concerns, says he doesn't expect an Oscar nomination for his new movie “Collateral Beauty” and that he is “beyond” it now.
"There was a time in my life when box office was everything and if you didn’t get nominated you’re under the bed for three weeks and all of that," he told British talk show "Lorraine." "It's always fun to be invited to the party, but that’s all it can be."
"I am a little bit beyond that at this point in my life. Anytime that anyone likes it, I will take that," Smith told Variety on Oscars chatter in an interview about the new film, which releases Friday.
“Collateral Beauty” is the story of an advertising executive, played by Smith, who is trying to deal with the loss of his 6-year-old daughter. He writes letters to Death, Love, and Time, and the three spirits visit him after he impulsively mails the letters.
The movie also features Edward Norton, Naomie Harris, Kiera Knightly, Kate Winslet, and Helen Mirren. It is directed by David Frankel.
Harris, who plays a support group counselor, hopes people will be inspired by her character to help others.
“I think it’s a generous way to live life and that’s very inspiring to me. I say the reminder here is that life is beautiful,” she told Variety.
Mirren, who plays Death in the film, told Variety, “I want the audience to leave with a sense of joy and courage.”
Smith said the movie touched a special chord with him because while shooting, he was in the process of losing his father.
